Based on an old square dance tune, "Give the Fiddler a Dram", Missouri Shindig represents the composer’s impression of a rural Missouri hoedown. As it opens, there is a gradual development of excitement as the party gets into full swing. The square dancers reflect the various moods of the fiddlers as they first become exhilarated, then clownish, then sentimental. The party is momentarily interrupted as the tune "How Dry I Am" is heard in the distance - however it is soon in full swing again, and the dancing is resumed.
