Composed in 2024 during my junior year at the University of Arizona, Modal Portals (Soundscapes of Light and Shadow) was written for my dear colleague and friend Jonathan Rodriguez Ortega, during his doctoral studies in guitar performance. This work reflects both a personal and artistic exploration of the guitar's capacity to traverse contrasting sonic worlds through subtle shifts of mode, harmony, and texture.
The composition unfolds as a sequence of seven interconnected "portals," each representing a distinct soundscape shaped by its own modal center. Through these gradual modulations from brightness to shadow, tension to resolution the listener is invited into a series of evolving atmospheres. While unified by a minimalist aesthetic, each portal functions as a brief technical and expressive study, offering the performer opportunities to explore nuanced articulation, resonance, and tone color.
Beyond its technical aspects, Modal Portals serves as a meditation on transformation: how the simplest shifts a single note, a color, a voicing can open new spaces of sound and feeling. As the title suggests, the work invites both performer and listener to journey through these thresholds of light and shadow, where clarity and ambiguity coexist.
