MosaicS

Mosaics was composed for A Perfect Fifth Woodwind Quintet in Saint Louis in 1991 and is dedicated to that quintet. The music is designed to showcase the individual colors of the ensemble and to explore the rich timbral palette of the many combinations of duos, trios and quartets that are available. Mosaics was extensively revised in the spring of 2026. Every tile in a mosaic is an individual piece of a larger surface whose beauty is a composite of all its tiles. So, it is with our beautiful planet. Every forest is the sum of all its trees, bushes rocks and soil. Every mighty river is made up countless billions of water molecules. All the stars, planets and galaxies above us are suspended in the universe in perfect equilibrium. So, it is also with all of our communities - villages, townships, states and nations. Each of us are like mosaic tiles placed in a larger design which attains its true beauty by the harmonious association of all of us.
