Mozartina is a vibrant orchestral rondo that masterfully fuses the elegance of Mozart with the rhythmic soul of the Dominican Republic. Commissioned in 1997 by the Fundación Filarmónica del Cibao for their opening concert, the work takes the traditional merengue “El jarro ’ta pichao” as its main theme and juxtaposes it with the iconic four-note motif from the finale of Mozart’s Jupiter Symphony.
Throughout the piece, the merengue melody appears in many guises — sometimes presented directly, sometimes inverted, fragmented, or woven into rich contrapuntal textures. The music moves through countless harmonic colors and orchestral techniques before reaching a joyous climax where the full merengue erupts, featuring the traditional tambora drum. A brief perico ripiao melisma appears in the horn, and the work concludes with a short tambora cadenza followed by the main theme stated in unison.
Mozartina received its world premiere with the Sinfónica del Cibao and was later performed by the National Symphony Orchestra of the Dominican Republic. It stands as a joyful celebration of cultural fusion — a contemporary Mozart infused with Caribbean identity.
