WORLD SAXOPHONE CONGRESS COMPOSITION PRIZE. Bruce Faulconer composed MUSIC FOR SAXOPHONE AND PERCUSSION: 1972 in 1972 while at the University of Texas at Austin. He received the Second Prize at the Third World Saxophone Congress in Toronto in 1972 for the composition. The premiere performance took place in August of 1972 in Toronto.
MUSIC FOR SAXOPHONE AND PERCUSSION: 1972 is set for Tenor Saxophone and Percussion (Two Players). The work incorporates multiphonics for the Saxophone. In "Multiphonics, A Scalar Model", Tom Bergeron writes about Faulconer's multiphonic techniques and manuscript notation innovations. Faulconer was originally inspired by the work of Bruno Bartolozzi, "New Sounds for Woodwind" (1967) and began to explore how multiphonics could be created with the saxophone.
Faulconers's Saxophone and Percussion composition is extensively discussed in a Doctoral Dissertation Abstract, "AN ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY OF SELECTED PUBLISHED WORKS FOR SAXOPHONE AND PERCUSSION BY NORTH AMERICAN COMPOSERS", by Barry Eugene McGinnis, 2002, pages 106-110.
The difficulty level is suggested for performance by High School, College, and Professional instrumentalists.
