The Runic languages and alphabets have recently become a subject of interest, as they play a part in the Harry Potter books and films. I investigated this topic, and chose the oldest surviving runic system to spell out a message, using only words and concepts that existed in their time, but applicable to our own. Then I tried to trace or outline these runes in musical shapes: chords scales, contrary motion, etc. Here is the result. An inexpensive and short piece of modern music, based on some of the oldest materials in Western culture. Audio is a MIDI file. Flexibility in all aspects of the piece in not only encouraged, but sort of required, as no one knows what these runes sounded like when they were pronounced. So, have at it!
