Nina Simone recorded her famous version of this tune in 1958, though it took nearly thirty years for it to achieve chart success, having been used by Chanel in a fragrance commercial in 1987. This chart has adapted her version to suit a full big band instrumentation. The piano part is written out in full and there are no sax doubles. The opening section of Simone's original piano solo is now taken as a five-part instrumental combo, plus rhythm, and the second half is a trumpet 2 and 3 duet, leading to a full band shout for the triplet passage which closes it out. The Simone version was originally recorded in the key of A. Mindful that this puts the transposing instruments into fairly awkward keys, the chart comes printed double sided, with the key raised to concert B-flat on the reverse of the parts, making it more player-friendly. The vocal would suit either a low alto female singer or a baritone male voice.
