My Love Is Fairer Than Any was commissioned by Jason Noble for the Scarsdale High School (NY) Band's tour of the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland in February 2019. The work received its world premieres in Cork and Dublin (RoI) and Belfast (NI) under Jason Noble's direction, and its U.S. premieres in April 2019 with the New Jersey City University Symphony of Winds and Percussion, under the direction of the composer.
The piece is based on the traditional Irish ballad, "Red Is the Rose", which shares the same melody as the Scottish tune, "Loch Lomond". The refrain of the Irish tune served as the inspiration of the work:
Red is the rose that in yonder garden grows. Fair is the lily of the valley. Clear is the water that flows from the Boyne. But my love is fairer than any.
