Born in Middletown, Ohio, Brown initially studied piano and music theory with Rebecca Shoup Willhide. This led to an undergraduate degree at Bowling Green State University and a master’s degree from the University of North Texas under the tutelage of Adam Wodnicki and Newel Kay Brown. His studies continued at Royal Holloway, University of London, where he received a research fellowship to study music competition and orchestration with Brian Lock. That research continued at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia Foundation in Rome, Italy.
Success came quickly to Brown and he was awarded the first prize at the Alienor International Harpsichord Composition Competition early on in his career. He has received multiple commissions, including The Daniel Pearl Music Foundation, The Rodgers Center for Holocaust Education, The Music Teachers National Association Collaborative Composer Commission and The Carter Albrecht Foundation. He has also received five commissions for contemporary works for dance.
His own compositions have been showcased at venues across the world, including the Mozarthaus Vienna, the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York City, Carnegie Hall, the “Library of Congress Concert Series” in Washington D.C, the Chapman University Symphony and Chorus and the Spoleto Music Festival. His most recent composition, for instance, The Classical Concerto for Piano and Orchestra, written in the style of Prokofiev’s first symphony, was premiered by Korean Hwa Jung Kee in Dallas.
