John Aguilar is an award-winning Band Director and equity-driven educator from Seattle, WA who is committed to ensuring that each and every student receives a high-quality and rigorous music education that will help them become successful citizens, scholars, artists, and activists in school and in life. As the founding band di...show more John Aguilar is an award-winning Band Director and equity-driven educator from Seattle, WA who is committed to ensuring that each and every student receives a high-quality and rigorous music education that will help them become successful citizens, scholars, artists, and activists in school and in life. He currently serves as the Director of Bands at Robert Eagle Staff Middle School and was responsible for creating the Band program since its inception in the Fall of 2017. As the founding band director, Aguilar’s Concert Bands, Jazz Bands, and Marching Band have garnered numerous Superior ratings, as well as First Place and Sweepstakes awards at local and out-of-state music festivals and competitions, including the Music In The Parks Festival and the famed University of Idaho Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival. The 140-piece “Marching Ravens” is one of the largest marching bands in the Seattle Public Schools has been invited to perform at numerous community and corporate events, most notably for the WNBA’s Seattle Storm and the Alliance For Education, and has been featured on local news stations, newspapers, and websites. In 2022, the Marching Ravens released a single entitled "SOAR" with Billboard-charting rap artist Marlon Wood, available on all major streaming platforms. In terms of participation, Aguilar has been able to build a racially diverse program that amounts for approximately a third of the school’s population, while organizing and coordinating hundreds of performance opportunities for his students to showcase their learning. In addition to his work at Robert Eagle Staff Middle School, Aguilar also serves as the Assistant Director for the Seattle All-City Marching Band, a summer music program for all high school students in the Seattle area. Aguilar is responsible for assisting the Director and Program Coordinator in logistics and operations, as well as in the teaching of the music and the marching fundamentals. Aguilar has also served as Drum Major Staff and Arranger during his 15 years in the program. Aguilar holds a Bachelors of Music in Music Education from the University of Washington, in which he served as Drum Major for the world-renowned University of Washington Husky Marching Band for 3 years. During his time at the UW, Aguilar also served as the Undergraduate Assistant of the marching band and is currently serving as the Drum Major Coach and is on the Arranging Staff. Aguilar holds membership in American Society of Composers Authors and Publishers (ASCAP), National Association for Music Education (NAfME), Washington Music Educators Association (WMEA), Seattle Education Association (SEA), and is an alumni member of Kappa Kappa Psi Honorary Band Service Fraternity.  show less
