Dance of the Lanna is the portrayal of a festival in Northern Thailand.  Lanna refers to the people who live there, and the festival celebrates rebirth of their heritage.  The festival is comprised of several dances depicting annual events of nature which provides the people with their sustenance. This piece portrays two of the dances: Dance of the Silk Weaver and Water is Life.  The festival opens with a prelude by expressive solo Thai flute, proceeding to Thai string orchestra and Pi Nai oboe announcing the festival; leading to a fast-paced announcement of the dancers, moving into the themes of each dance, interspersed by the reintroductions of the dancers as they transition through each dance.  The dances are slow with beautifully flowing movements.  Since it is very hot there, exertion is kept minimal, some dances included fans or umbrellas to help cool the dancers.  The style is slow, dramatic, unique movement of the dancers, appearing simplicity.  The dancers are professionally trained since childhood.  This piano solo uses techniques unique to the style of Thai music, depicting instruments used that are foreign to the piano student.  The piece was composed for a piano student from Thailand descent who wanted to play music of his country on the piano.  The mp3 is from computer notation. A search on YouTube will provide the performance in concert, with a modification by the piano student for a friend to play the flute opening, and and added treat with a dance by his sister, which was taught by their grandmother. <p>An energizing and fun quartet, this is a commission In commemoration of the centenary and history of Poland, this piano quintet is a concert rendition with virtuosic piano interludes of the five National Dances, which includes the National Anthem, a Mazurka. All are in 3/4 time except the Krakowiak in 2/4. The melodies are shared among the instruments, giving fun parts to each one, including a dramatic four-part harmony in the Anthem that illustrates the beauty and intimacy of a string quartet. The piano utilizes the full range of the keyboard, and at one point simultaneously plays above and beneath the strings. The piece concludes with a flourish of motifs of the dances, ending with a dramatic Oberek. Mp3 and video of live performance.</p>

Piano Quintet- 2 Violins, Viola, Cello, Piano Ensemble

This fun duet in reminiscent of an Irish Jig.  It is from a set of modal duets which
  illustrate the fifth, emphasizing how each mode creates a different
  mood.  
    
    The ionian mode is a major scale, and creates a happy mood.  This duet is a fast, fun dance. The melody
  interchanges between
    
    Primo and Secondo. The rhythm is in 6/8 time with many dotted rhythms,
  which help create the feeling of playfulness.

Ionian Jig - One Piano Four Hands

<p>Written for a jazz violinist who wanted to do something "sort of classical", but not too "long-hair." All movements are rhythmic, some dissonance, contemporary and dramatic, staging conflict between violin and piano. Mvt. I - 6/4 time with displaced accents, mysterious and intense. Mvt. 2 - dreamy, whole tone, sparse piano with inside piano options. Mvt. 3 - chromatic, agitato, poly-tonal, jazzy and fast! The mp3 is from computer notation and is mvt. 3 only, although the entire piece has been performed many times.</p>

Trilogy for Violin and Piano

This piece is in G melodic minor, with several variations; slow and dreamy and never
getting too fast. It modulates to D minor, and ends in a relaxed and contented G Major.
The melody is in two parts: the Left Hand, as well as the top note of the chords in the
Right Hand. The piece is improvisational in style; emotional with a laid-back feel.

Languorous

Piano, Vibraphone, Temple Blocks, Marimba, Bongos, Double Bass.  Percussion can be played by two players doubling as suggested.  This piece is well liked and fun to play!  A version of the Piano and Other Percussion (full ensemble), this version has just four players.  Three movements of fun music in a rhythmic and harmonic Jazz-style.   1. Jazzy is fast, with bongos, temple blocks, vibraphone, piano;  2. SlowDown changes the mood to dreamy and restful with vibraphone, piano short cadenza, and replacing the conga for marimba;  3. RunAway is very fast with virtuosic piano (a fun show-off piece!), continuing with vibraphone, marimba, bass.  The double bass adds a connecting-legato aspect to the percussion. The composers and students decide together on a composition written according to the requests of the student. Brian requested a fast, tonal piece in the key of G, that is like Clementi.

1.Movin'Along is chromatic and contrapuntal, 3 themes transported among the instruments, endig with a flourish in counterpoint.
2.Slow Winds opens with the clarinet in a bluesy mood.  Oboe, followed by the horn, brings in a second theme, which is a hint of the first movement. Counterpoint paves the way for sharing the melodies and accompaniment
3. Faster Winds is rhythmic, with the instruments moving together, ending with special effects in each instrument, winding down for a calm ending

Five Pieces for Unaccompanied Cello

Mood Suite is a set of five piano solos depicting moods that we all
  experience: Restless, Peaceful, Mood Swings (Monkey Thoughts), Anger, Fun
  (Dance-Crazy Waltz). The set began as a commission for the Billings (MT)
  Music Teachers Association (1986), and has been used in several variations
  for specific events; some have changed titles, but all remain the same in
  structure. All have been enjoyed by students, teachers, and professional
  pianists! The set is comprised of iteaching piecesi, each in its own
  scale and composition style. The title changes have been influenced by the
  purpose of the event that directed them; (i.e. see PDX); as well as
  inicknamesi by students or performers; (i.e. iMood Swingsi became
  iMonkey Thoughtsi; iFuni became iDancei and then iCrazy
  Waltzi). Have fun with these pieces--interpret them to fit your own
  moods!

Beautiful and serene solo lines, beginning with English Horn and shared throughout the orchestra, accompanied by a pulsing bass motif that  re-appears in other instruments throughout the piece.  A pleasant and soothing piece to play and for the audience.  Excellent for opener of a concert (5 min), or programed within. Well crafted melodic lines, as well as soothing part writing. Somewhat modal, with hints of resolution, ends on the major.

Serenity

Exciting, mystical, challenging, but serene and interpretive as it  intensely depicts Chinook history on the Big Waters of what becomes the  Columbia River, the music portrays the ancient Chinook chief: her love for  her people as she watches over them in Idyllic times, her helplessness and  they perish, her hope as they are reborn.a  Composed as a special project depicting the Chinook Nation of the  Columbia River (Washington-Oregon), the piece is in traditional Native American  style: 5/4 and 3/4 time; irregular rhythms, interaction between voices,  pentatonic bending tones, "heterophony", as explained in the  program notes.a Mp3 of computer  notation, plus video of live performance.

Voice

This piece is based on a poem by e.e. cummings. The subject matter is the special
heaven that would be created for the poet's mother. The music shadows, augments,
and illuminates the rendition of the poem. In keeping with poetic symbolism, the piano
uses motifs and musical phrases to emulate the soprano throughout the piece
The tone of the piece is somewhat minor and modal; however, please portray a light-
hearted interpretationit should never be heavy or dark. The poet is uplifting his mother
to the highest stature possible, and portrays his father as devoted and loving towards
her.
The key is atonal; however, various tonality implications are heard throughout. The
piano pedal should be complimentary to the piece, with care not to be noticed or over-
bearing.
