In 2023, shakuhachi player, Marco Lienhard of the international performing group Taikoza, asked me if I'd be interested in composing a duo for shakuhachi and guitar as part of a project he was planning with classical guitarist Danton Oestreich. The aim of the project is to expand the literature for this unusual combination of instruments from different musical traditions--instruments that compliment each other very well.
Written in a time just emerging from the covid 19 pandemic and in a world of growing strife and uncertainty, I chose to write a duo that uses the samba rhythm to covey a story of navigating through difficult times without losing hope.
