I found myself in a rut and wanted to expand some of the harmonies I was using in my wind ensemble music, and this is the end result. Lots of inspiration from John Williams and Jacob Collier encouraged me to be more colorful and expansive with my chord choices. The name Chrysanthemum was originally chosen just because I thought it was beautiful but somehow relevant. I then discovered that Chrysanthemums are said to have different meanings depending on which color the flower is, which I found to be a happy accident since I feel that this piece has some different colors and emotions throughout.

	The ostinato throughout should be consistent but not overpowering. Encourage the 2nd Clarinet to bring their C-Bb pitch change in the 2nd half of the phrase (ex. m.3-4). The melody in the F Horn and Alto Sax 1 can be a solo for either instrument, or a soli from either/both sections. Be mindful of the syncopation in the Timpani at m. 25 and the Timpani, Bass Drum and Crash Cymbal at m. 87. Also be mindful that the crash cymbal doesnit overplay throughout. For the Headless Tambourine part at     m. 47 I ended up mounting a tambourine to a cymbal stand, but you can also lay it on a percussion table, upside down if you have heads on all your tambourines.

RECORDING NOTE:
	On the recording you will hear a couple of minor mistakes. 
There was a miscommunication in the Glockenspiel part at the beginning that was fixed after recording. The Gb is played through the entire measure in the 2nd half of the phrase (ex. M. 7-8), as well as Db and Gb in m. 15-16
 The Flute melody at m. 45 is played incorrectly. 
The Percussion ends up out of sync at m. 95.

Chrysanthemum

Concert Band Score & Parts

This piece was written in celebration of the completion of the new band and performing arts room at Hillcrest in Spring 2015. I was very lucky that the city of Sebastopol voted yes on a parcel tax to fund construction in only my 2nd year of teaching. Id never written for large ensembles before but I felt it was necessary to properly welcome the new building onto campus.

	Allow the 1st Trumpet and 1st Trombone parts to lead the melody at the beginning. There are plenty of opportunities for different articulations throughout, mostly switching between marcato and legato. Let the descending parts at m. 38, particularly 2nd Trumpet and 1st F Horn, lead this closing melody

RECORDING NOTE:
The recording youll hear  was recorded before I made a couple of edits. You will hear the F Horns playing some ascending accented notes in m. 35. I decided they were unnecessary and removed them from the score.

Fanfare for Band

I've always enjoyed a piece of music that has an overall message of hope. "Glimmer" was written not only as a message of hope, but also as a journey through some of the other emotions people might encounter when searching for hope.

Glimmer

Take flight with this journey through the clouds! Floating woodwinds  and soaring melodies will create a beautiful environment for younger musicians and their audience. I was inspired by the music featured in the queue of my favorite Disneyland attraction: Soarin'.

Chasing Sunbeams

Enjoy this concert opener (or closer) with your younger bands! Tempo changes, accidentals, and varied articulations give young musicians plenty of skills to develop while still being accessible for musicians and audience members.

Viva Las Pumas

This piece, written for my "Hawk Band" at Hillcrest, was
  supposed to be a celebration of "The end of the pandemic". While we
  did end up back at school in the fall of 2021, there were still safety
  protocols in place that left us feeling like things weren't quite back to
  normal. Still, there were plenty of joyous moments throughout the year as we
  all preferred being on campus instead of distance learning.
    
    
    
    The piece starts in a homophonic chorale style in octaves, splitting into
  harmony at m. 10 and then polyphony at m. 20. Percussionists lead the tempo
  change at m. 31. The clarinet 1 part at m. 53 is another extra layer of
  movement so let that part come out. Big timpani solo in the last 5 measures.

Our Time Has Come

This piece was written to be premiered at the Sonoma County Jumpstart session at Cazadero Music Camp in Fall 2022. During this retreat, students from a dozen different middle and high schools get together for a weekend of music under the towering redwoods along the Russian River. Theres a moment at the camp when youre sitting in the seats of the outdoor amphitheater if you look straight up and the breeze is gently touching the tops of the trees  that they start to sway back and forth. This piece not only was geared towards younger musicians to encourage them to play legato, but also to try and capture the serenity and beauty of that moment under the trees.

	The F# in the alto sax, while important to the chord during the opening and closing section, shouldnt be overplayed. F Horn, Alto and Tenor saxophones add a soaring counter melody from m. 27-39. Feel free to stretch out the last 3 chords of the piece.

Swaying

The title of this piece was inspired by the bookends of my formal music
  education in Sonoma County, starting at Evergreen Elementary School and
  ending at Sonoma State University, both in Rohnert Park, CA. I would ride my
  bike along Copeland Creek to get to class at SSU, just like I rode my bike
  (along a different creek) to get to class when I was a kid. This piece was
  composed for my 2021/22 aBlue Banda at Hillcrest, which is made up of
  mostly 1st and 2nd year players.
    
    
    
    	Make sure to encourage unmarked quarter notes in the winds to be played at
  their full value. There is some extra emphasis on this concept with tenutos
  specifically marked throughout. The key change at m.45 and the preceding
  measures present a great opportunity to discuss key signatures with younger
  musicians. The percussion will let all their instruments ring at the end
  until the sound has dissipated. There is melodic material throughout the
  ensemble, giving everyone their time in the spotlight.

Evergreens on Copeland Creek

Enjoy this concert opener, composed to show school spirit! Our principal at Hillcrest, Will Deeths, is the most enthusiastic man you'll ever see at a middle school campus. Over his tenure he has coined the phrase "Soar Hawks Soar!", since our school mascot is the hawks, and uses it multiple times daily during announcements, assemblies, etc. When I heard that we were getting a scrap metal sculpture by renowned local artist Patrick Amiot I knew I had to compose a piece for its unveiling. I then realized I could use this piece to also celebrate Principal Deeths, and the title was just too obvious.

Soar Hawks Soar!

This energetic piece is a fantastic way for young musicians to utilize different articulations and accidentals, with a focus on C harmonic minor. This piece is also great for bands with smaller percussion sections.
