This is a fanciful, tuneful, lyrical, lively, tightly constructed and unabashedly programmatic chamber work. It is meant to be fun to play and fun to listen to, and is a proven crowd-pleaser. The first two movements are of medium difficulty, while the last movement is quite challenging in parts. These are not Chopin-style nocturnes; rather, with movements entitled NIGHT FALLS, SINGING TO THE MOON, and MIDNIGHT REVELS, the piece tells the story of a nocturnal musical adventure for an anthropomorphized flute in an idyllic moonlit landscape. The first movement is stately and evocative, the second is lyrical and romantic, and the third is a zany romp which includes callbacks to the two earlier movements.
