"Khamis' Tabla" is composed in memory of the great Egyptian tabla virtuoso, Khamis Henkish, and dedicated to his family. This piece is written as a solo for the Arab sumbati tabla with accompanying Arab percussion. The Arab percussion accompanying the tabla soloist should be diverse. Suggestions for accompanying instruments include dohola (bass tablas) and tar/def (frame drums). A single riq may also be included in addition to a single Egyptian mazhar (large tambourine) and single tabl baladi (bass drum).

"Duet for Frame Drums" was composed for the Brooklyn Park Middle School Percussion Ensemble and premiered May 26, 2009 at the Chesapeake Arts Center in Baltimore, MD. This piece is written as a duet, however it may be performed as a large ensemble in two parts. The drums used for this piece should have a subtle contrast in sound. They may be grouped by pitch, ornamental features or performance techniques, depending on your ensemble's available resources. Performers of the this piece should be familiar with traditional performance techniques for Middle Eastern frame drums.

Duet for Frame Drums

Con Salsa, Por Favor "With Sauce, Please" is a piece for percussion ensemble in the Cuban son montua style. It features traditional Latin American instruments and authentic rhythms. This piece may be performed with as few as 7 players. The marimba part may be divided between two players, as well as any parts requiring multiple instruments, making the piece more accessible to younger players. The bongos and bongo bell should be played in the traditional manner, with the player switching between instruments during the verse and chorus sections. The bongos may also be featured with an improvised solo at rehearsal letter D. The bongo bell should be hand-held, with the mouth of bell upright. Low tones are played by striking the bell near the mouth and high tones are played by striking the bell on the side near the top of the bell. The tempo change at rehearsal letter F should be played at a comfortable tempo, as fast or faster than the indicated tempo. Enjoy, and be sure to order it "con salsa, por favor!"

"So New" is a modern interpretation of the traditional Malian rhythm Sounou. Sounou is believed to have originated prior to the colonization of West Africa and is performed to facilitate competitive dance between boys. This arrangement, for young percussion ensemble, retains many of the traditional elements of Malian Sounou; the Malian bass drums with their associated rhythms and variations, the popular djembe in multiple parts and the characteristic African iron bells. Some non-traditional elements have been added. The high bell pattern at rehearsal letter C is borrowed from the son clava pattern found in Afro-Cuban music and is applied here because the traditional low bell pattern is rhythmically the same as the Afro-Cuban cascara. At rehearsal letter D a call and response section is added. While this may not be typical of Sounou, call and response frequently occurs in Malian music. Finally, the lead djembe has been given slash notation to allow the leader freedom to support other instruments in the ensemble. This arrangement may be expanded for improvised solos or dancers by using the first endings to repeat sections. Perhaps these can be made competitive like in Mali!
