Speed Trap Blues is humorous and playful. The form is 12-bar blues at its most simple harmonically but with rhythmic twists and challenges. The scales are modal hybrids and the number 5 plays a big role (5/8 time or 5-bar phrases or 5-phrased sections). The section descriptions do mirror the actual speed trap set up on my street the day I was looking for titles: Fast curves Slow cruisin' and Roadrunner. A challenging work suitable for professional and advanced student ensembles.

RagaPlay is scored for alto sax, cello, dumbek and piano.  Suitable for advanced student or professional musicians. This work is based on a mode very similar to the Hindustani Rag Bhairav  which has here been used freely, but not irreverently, and adapted to Western ways, such as modulation, chord progressions, counterpoint, and small incursions of chromaticism.   Suggested drum(s) include doumbek, tabla, conga, bongos, medium to higher pitched. Total duration: c. 8:45

Temporary Landscapes for clarinet and piano is a challenging work with 5 sections, each reflecting a specific emotional quality.  The sections are arranged in an order that tells a story of a life progressing through a series of "temporary landscapes."  For most of the work, the pitches used are the same, but the modalities shift as the tonal center shifts.  Suitable for advanced students or professional musicians.  Duration: c. 15:00

Brass Trio

This piece is called Soundings, because the outer sections of it have to do with the natural resonance of the piano - holding down some notes while playing others, etc.  The middle section is just a romp, an impromptu that is called “selah” in the score, because that’s what the Psalmist says to the musicians periodically, and it is thought to mean “play on!”  Performing this on a grand piano will produce much greater resonance in the outer sections of Soundings.

Piano Solo

The Return is a work for piano trio, suitable for advanced students and professional musicians.  The title comes from the Tao Te Ching #25, by Lao Tzu, which says that the Tao is called great and that it flows far away, and then returns.  This passage presents an image of the universe and its energy in a ceaseless cycle of expansion and contraction.  This work is a single movement, with four sections, written in a beautiful dark mode (m2, m3, M3, P5, m6, m7).  Duration:  c. 13:50

A suite of five pieces for solo piano with themes of winter quiet and creative regeneration. Includes: "Solitude;" "Facing In," "Weaving Stories," "Listening to Snow Lighting Candles" and "Midnight Dance." Suitable for early advanced and advanced pianists.

In fast 5's with polymeters and fast jazzy rhythm changes, this is a short, fun, and challenging work for sax quartet (SATB).   Suitable for professional and advanced student ensembles.
