Program Note:
I've become somewhat dissillussioned to the fact that day after day, we as a society come
across headlines and news stories that no longer triggers a reaction. We see stories about
mass shootings, government corruption, corporate greed, that would typically come with
feelings of anger and sadness - but we're so accustomed to these stories that we've become
numb to all of it.
This thought brought about "numb."- a large work for wind ensemble in three sections.
Each section opens with a melodic theme, whose notes are taken from the first letter of
several news outlets (Fox News, CNN, BBC, etc.), each theme previewing the general style
of the section it is introducing. The first section represents the rage-baiting and fear-
mongering stories from journalists just trying to get clicks and engagement, featuring
aggressive and angular low brass ostinati and dissonant harmonies in the upper winds and
brass. The second section represents the traumatic and depressing stories, featuring a
chorale-like passage typical of a band work on a similar theme, transitioning into a passage
featuring biting low brass harmonies and the same melody repeated in a more disjunct
setting in the upper winds. The third section represents the outrageous and absurd stories
(think your typical "Florida Man" story), featuring syncopated motives and a driving
rhyhtm section led by the hi-hat, bongos, and double bass.
