O Come, O Come Emmanuel comes from a 7-verse poem that dates back to the 8th century. It was used in a call and response fashion during the vespers, or evening service.
In this arrangement, the tune repeats four times. The first is slow, soft and flowing, starting with the double reeds and builds to a climax in the "rejoice" part of the tune. The second section is up-tempo with a rhythmic background. The next section is in three and presents a more mystical treatment. Going back to a 4/4 time, the last section is a more grandiose version leading the finale.
