"O Jesulein Suss" is the tune name of a Lutheran nativity hymn, the German text translated variously as "O Little One Sweet" or "O Jesus Sweet", although some hymnals have the same tune under a different name "O Heiliger Geist", with entirely different lyrics addressed to the Holy Spirit.
The J.S. Bach harmonization is presented here as the opening theme, with several variations. Although the original is quite beautiful, it is not well known as a Christmas carol, as it has not found its way into our armamentaria of seasonal shopping music. I know of the hymn only because many years ago, as a college freshman, I was quite struck by it when some of us students were caroling around the piano one evening in four-part harmony, and one of my classmates showed it to us. Now all these years later I am very glad to be able to commemorate that occasion in music and in print.
