Oh, Fateful Rivers!, a Grade 3 concert march, is a tribute to Illinois and the Mississippi River that flows south along its western border. It also refers to that river of stars in the sky, the Milky Way, and to the discovery of the (dwarf) planet Pluto, found in 1930 in the Kuiper Belt by native Illinoisan Clyde Tombaugh (1906-1997).
Like a calliope sounding from a paddle wheeler steaming down the Mississippi, the march also salutes John Philip Sousa, the March King (1854-1932), who served as lieutenant commander of the Naval Reserve Band in Illinois during World War I.
The carnival-like atmosphere of this march for concert band praises the accomplishments—scientific and musical—of these two famous men, their bygone era, and the steadfastness of the fateful rivers that joins them together.
Oh, Fateful Rivers! is dedicated to the Kewanee High School (Boilermakers) Band, Alex Binek, director, and their one-hundred-year history celebrated in 2024.
Robert Coné is a former music educator. He lives in his hometown, Kewanee, Illinois.
