One for Duke

One for Duke (from the CD Pop-Culture Blues recorded by the Michael Treni Big Band) is a 12-bar atonal blues. Its theme is presented throughout in four (or more) keys simultaneously while using the double diminished chord voicings frequently employed by Duke Ellington. The atonal effect is enhanced by the bass line which begins on the diminished 5th rather than the root of the written chord. The thematic material for the entire piece is derived from the three notes of the introduction.
