This familiar sneaky theme was originally composed for solo piano by French composer Charles Gounod in 1872 as a bit of a joke about a particular music critic. The mysterious and foreboding motif has since been used in film and TV, most notably as the theme for the show Alfred Hitchcock Presents. This string orchestra arrangement skillfully weaves the ominous melody into all sections, retaining the original D minor key with the traditional change to the parallel D major in the middle. Players will experience various accidentals in 6/8 meter, with minimal shifting in first violin and cello. With the ghostly whimsy of a danse macabre, this scary classic is perfect for your fall or Halloween concert!

This two-movement piece is based on "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow." The first section, entitled Ichabod's Walk, is introduced with lines from the American classic: "What fearful shapes and shadows beset his path amidst the dim and ghastly glare of a snowy night!" The second movement, entitled Hessian's Ride, is introduced with lines that end "...the apparition of a figure on horseback without a head. It is said by some to be the ghost of a Hessian trooper." The chilling music will be the highlight of your concert! Highly recommended!

Two solo violins and a solo viola introduce this piece through a haunting, lyrical theme, which is subsequently taken up by the entire orchestra. It expands, gradually morphing into a fast and frenetic second theme. The two themes are then heard at the same time, each vying for attention. The pace slackens momentarily before a wild coda closes the piece. Full of a wide variety of colors and interesting tonalities, this work gives every section of the mature string orchestra a chance to shine.

Incantations

Tell the mischievous tale of La bruja ("the witch") in this wonderful arrangement. A favorite of mariachi groups due to its hauntingly beautiful melody, this is the perfect introduction to folk songs from Veracruz. The waltz-like melody countered with hemiolas and traditional Mexican folk rhythms will definitely make an impact on your students. The optional guitar adds to the folk character and traditional spirit of the work.

La Bruja

From Disney and Tim Burton's hit film "The Nightmare Before Christmas," Danny Elfman's quirky, spooky tune is a terrific program choice for both Halloween and holiday-themed concerts. Students  will be thrilled to perform this memorable tune.

It's ghostly! It's creepy! Your orchestra will love it! From the driving opening motives to the quirky gypsy-sounding theme, this is haunted-house music at its best! You can play this with either full or string orchestra, but the percussion section is really vital and should be used in both cases.  This is recommended and will thrill and delight your audience! A winner!

The Magic of Harry Potter

It's great for year-round use, but would be especially scary at Halloween.  The composer describes it as "a dark and sinister night full of strange happenings and ghoulish encounters."  Opening with a menacing march as creatures emerge from the darkness, dissonances soon appear in upper strings, including the chance to play any pitch in the chaos!  Finally the audience hears footsteps in retreat from the coming dawn.

Especially well suited for first-year students, this dark-sounding piece will give students a mature, full sound. Written in B natural minor, it utilizes only the notes of the D major scale with easy finger patterns and simple rhythms throughout.

The Grotto

The clock strikes midnight, a ghostly fiddler plays eerie tones, and skeletons dance until the rooster crows at dawn. Perfect for Halloween or as a change of pace for any time of year!
