Nicknamed "Prague" after the city of its premiere, Mozart's Symphony No. 38 followed quickly after the resounding success of his opera "The Marriage of Figaro," which also premiered in 1786. This arrangement functions much like a concerto grosso, with string soloists performing the woodwind parts accompanied by tutti string sections and timpani, just as Mozart penned them. As such, it is a great teaching tool for playing in Classical style and an opportunity to feature your top players in a brilliant piece of timeless repertoire.

Known for his thousands of film, radio, and symphonic arrangements, prolific composer Norman Leyden published this suite for string orchestra in 1971. The four brief, contrasting movements blend classical/baroque tradition with stylistic harmonies popular to the era. Movements include: I. Prelude II. Fugue III. Nocturne IV. Cakewalk. An excellent choice for intermediate ensembles.

Adventuresome and exuberant, Upward! captures the spirit of those looking to take on the world! Like the title, the main musical idea and its variations effortlessly ascend throughout the work. Performers are able to master each new challenge in stride, from simple quarter note bow strokes to optional double stops to energized eighth notes. Playable with open strings and a one octave D major scale, a first position bass part, and simple phrasing, Upward! is easily accessible for musicians and audiences alike! Upward! should be performed with controlled, energetic bow strokes. On quarter notes, performers can think the word "zing" to energize and emphasize bow changes. Slight space ("zip") may help articulate repeated notes in larger ensembles like those found in measure 28. Eighth notes should be played with "sticky" bows that do not leave the string, using no more than half the bow. Half notes are a perfect place to check for straight, controlled bow strokes. Beautiful left hand position is required to play this piece. Fingers should hover above the string when not in use, so they are ready to play in tune and in time. Double stops are most effectively performed non-divisi but may be divided at the discretion of the director. Musicians may need to practice playing double stops on open strings before adding fingers.

Wonka

Expressing the many different moods and events of a storm, the opening begins with the violins playing a gripping ostinato pattern suggesting that a storm is coming. The first two themes convey the erratic tendency of powerful gusty winds. The storm moves into a peaceful lull with a melancholy third theme played by a solo violin and viola. The storm then grows in intensity as the final statement combines all the elements (or themes) of the storm.

Overture to the Wind

Chiquinha Gonzaga was a well-known composer from Brazil who, it is estimated, had 2,000 pieces to her credit. This arrangement captures the vitality and rhythmic motion of the music of Brazil – it's a showcase for the entire ensemble!
