This movie music unit is a great way to engage upper-elementary and middle school students and get them composing, listening, analyzing, and thinking about music. Students explore the importance of music and sound in film, learn about different music jobs within the film industry focusing on Foley artists and score composers, and add their own sound effects and soundtrack to a short film. This project can be done in a variety of ways to suit your classroom needs, including individual assignment, small group work, or full class activity. There are several components that can be taught separately or together so you can pick and choose what you want to include.

Movie Music Composition Project

These resources introduce students to musical instruments from six different countries and make great tie-ins to other world music studies, instruments of the orchestra, and the science of sound. Given pictures of instruments from a particular country, students use their knowledge of instruments to describe the instrument and predict what it will sound like. After listening to the instrument, they describe the actual sound and compare it to other instruments, seeing if their predictions were accurate. This same unit can also be used to supplement a deeper study of a particular country or region, or as an introduction to world music in general. Teaching suggestions are included for using the resources in several different ways. This unit includes resources to study instruments from Iran, Australia, Mexico, Sweden, Jamaica, and Indonesia.

World Instruments Listening Unit 2

Video Game Music Composition Project

This lesson set is a wonderful resource to add to your world music collection. Use it to teach students about pentatonic and minor music with slides showing the solfege, create an Orff ensemble piece with barred percussion borduns, teach low C, E, and F on recorder, identify same and different musical phrases, and learn the Japanese language and culture. The song Sakura is the most famous Japanese song around the world. This lesson set includes everything you need to apply the song to a variety of concepts in your classroom, as well as information about Japan and the importance of sakura (cherry blossoms) in the culture. Sakura: Japanese Folk Song Lesson Set

This is a complete curriculum resource for K-6 general music. It is designed to be adapted to a variety of teaching needs, so the material is organized by concept within each month rather than scripted lessons. You can design your own specific lesson plans based on the standards you need to address, the amount of class time you have, and the students and resources you have in your classes. Everything you need to teach the lessons is included. The materials in this set are teacher-tested and can easily be used in a variety of methodologies including Orff, Kodaly, Dalcroze, and Suzuki, and are careful to incorporate a wide range of learning styles and interests. This set can be used as a stand-alone curriculum - there is enough material to cover eight half-hour lessons per month - or you can pick and choose your favorites to incorporate into other curricula you may already be using. World Instruments Listening Unit 1

This is a perfect project for upper-elementary and middle school students to demonstrate their understanding of chords, help them practice composing and notating, and work towards the final performance. This project takes students through the process of writing a composition by creating a chord progression, notating it, composing a melody to fit the chords, assigning parts, practicing it, determining and rehearsing a message to communicate through the composition, and performing the piece. The project can be adapted to incorporate ukuleles, keyboard instruments, Boomwhackers, xylophones, or even free online software to fit your classroom needs.
 
The worksheets and rubric are in Word document form so that you can edit everything to fit the needs of your specific students, setting, and curricular goals. The slides are in PowerPoint so you can edit them to fit your needs as well.
