Organizing Time

This outstanding text presents a systematic approach to understanding all the components of rhythm-including pulse, subdivision, meter, and tempo. The methods and exercises have been used successfully by the author with students ranging from young beginners to adults. The text proposes a method of counting which uses numbers exclusively, and tracks only the number of subdivisions or superdivisions within any given measure. This book is suitable either for a self contained study of rhythm or as part of an integrated program combining ear-training and/or written theory. There are no shortcuts proposed in this text, since progress simply cannot be expected without attention to the rhythm as a foundation. The author offers countless examples and exercises designed to make sense of simple and complex counting.
