Christoph Willibald Gluck’s Iphigénia at Aulis (1774) marks his first opera for the Paris stage and a major milestone in his operatic
reform movement. Although the opera initially struggled for popularity, its overture was immediately and consistently admired,
even at the premiere.
Gluck’s overtures were designed not as showpieces but as dramatic gateways—musical prologues that prepare the listener for the
emotional and narrative world of the opera. In his own words, he sought a relationship between music and drama akin to
“harmonious coloring” enhancing a drawing without distorting it.
It begins with a slow, grave introduction, evoking the solemnity of the Greek tragedy, then moves into a vigorous allegro, full of
rhythmic drive and dramatic tension.
This arrangement is on the Florida Bandmasters Association Contest List, grade 6.
