Penguin Promenade is a lively and fun beginning band piece perfect for first-year concerts or classroom learning. Designed for young musicians, it uses the first five notes in simple yet engaging patterns to create harmonies across instrument sections. Each section of the bandbrass, woodwinds, and percussiongets a chance to play the melody or melodic-like passages. The brass and woodwind parts feature only whole notes, half notes, quarter notes, and rests, while the percussion (snare drum, tambourine, cabasa) introduces some light eighth-note rhythms. The mallet parts can be performed on any mallet instrument (two-octave range included), with the xylophone being especially fitting for the upbeat and jovial feel of the piece. Penguin Promenade is an excellent choice for introducing young bands to ensemble playing while maintaining a fun and energetic atmosphere.
This piece directly correlates with the Foundation Warm-Up Series. This series is designed to follow most beginning band methods. The early sets focus primarily on airflow, common patterns, and reinforcing concepts presented in the method books. As the series develops, the sets become more like a traditional band warm-up, including long tones, flexibility exercises, articulation, scale patterns, and a chorale.
