Level One is designed for advanced beginners who can already play hands together.  Tasks and lessons include whole notes, half notes, quarter notes, dotted half notes, whole rests, half rests, quarter rests, and dotted half rests.  Dynamics are encouraged and taught as well as the useage of crescendos and diminuendos.  Phrasing techniques such as slurs, legato, staccato and accents are introduced. The time signatures that are taught are 3/4, 4/4, and 5/4 and the key signatures that are utilized are C Major, G Major and F Major. Repeats, 8va, ties, fermatas and ritardandos are taught as well.

It is designed to provide the elementary-level reading, technique, and theory skills required for preparatory-level piano literature. The clean layout without instruction allows teachers freedom to adapt it to each student and each situation. The Repertoire book provides students with short, progressive pieces starting on middle-C position. The last piece, Twilight, has students moving to new five-finger positions with each four-measure phrase: C major, F major, G major, and F minor. A CD of duet accompaniments is included. Each accompaniment is presented in at least two tempos: a practice tempo and a performance tempo. The Technic and Theory books support the pieces in the Repertoire book.

Level D falls at the late elementary level and features slightly longer pieces, generally 16-32 measures in length. The concepts presented are slightly more advanced than in the previous books and include tempo markings, damper pedal, and half and whole steps.  Tetrachords are used as an introduction to the Major scale.  The keys of C and G Major are presented, instructing the student to play them in one octave between two hands.

Book 2 continues with pieces dedicated to one hand only. The first half of the book provides pre-reading pieces with letter names in note heads, gradually introducing the child to all the notes in middle C position. The second half of Book 2 gradually shows the child those notes on either the treble or bass staves.

Piano for the Young Beginner utilizes the middle C approach, from pre-staff notation to reading from the grand staff. Slower pacing offers additional reinforcement to ensure a solid foundation of fundamental skills and concepts. The combination of original, folk, and seasonal songs, and full-color artwork makes learning a treat. Children will love the bright, happy melodies, fun, clever lyrics, and captivating, pedagogically related illustrations. Primer A (pre-reading to early elementary level) gives a brief orientation to black key groups with supporting tunes and moves to white keys where students play by reading letter names in noteheads one note at a time. Gradually, each staff is introduced and then the grand staff is presented. All tunes are in middle C position. Primer B (elementary level) starts with tunes in middle C position and soon introduces C Major position and later G Major position. Melodic and harmonic intervals of 2nds, 3rds, 4ths, and 5ths are presented as are the concepts of dynamics, slurs and ties, sharps and flats, legato and staccato, and rests. Students who complete Primers A &amp; B are ready for study in Level 1 of Bastien Piano Basics or any elementary level method.

Students who have completed either the Primer Level or Bastien Piano Basics: Piano for the Young Beginner should move on to Level 1 of Bastien Piano Basics and continue their musical development with happy, effervescent pieces enriched by charming, colorful illustrations. Level 1 starts with review of what was covered in Primer Level and simple tunes in C Major position. The student is required to play single notes or parallel octaves between the hands at this point. There is also a review of sharps, flats, and the C Major chord . The two-note dominant seventh is presented. Later, five finger positions of F Major and both G Major positions are covered, as are their tonic (3 note) and dominant seventh (2 note) chords. Bass clef line notes and space notes are drilled and a few pages later the treble clef notes are drilled. Other concepts include damper pedal, single eighths, dotted quarter notes and natural signs.

Bastien Piano Basics

These workbooks allow students to learn by doing one-page-lessons away from the piano, with their Note Speller and a pencil. Book 1 begins with identifying line notes versus space notes. Then, letter names on both the treble and bass staves are taught with slogans such as "Every Good Bird Does Fly" and "F-A-C-E." Accidentals, rhythmic values, ledger lines, enharmonic notes and more are also taught in Book 1. Book 2 carries on where Book 1 left off. Students are required to spell notes on the staff according to tonality (G, F, D, Bb, A, Eb Major), identify accidentals, ties versus slurs, inner and outer ledger lines, intervals and much more. Various rhythmic exercises on such subjects as the use of dots after a note and triplets are also included in Book Two.

Piano 101 is an exciting group course for adults, with little or no keyboard experience, who want to play piano for fun. It's a comprehensive approach to functional musicianship at the keyboard that includes repertoire, theory, technique, sight-reading, harmonization from lead sheets, ear training and ensembles. Great for college non-music majors, continuing education classes, even private piano lessons. Students start slowly by tapping rhythms, playing simple tunes on groups of black keys, playing pre-staff-reading tunes on the white keys, and finally learning to read from the grand staff in middle C position and then C Major position. Supportive teacher accompaniments are found throughout. The accompanying CDs and General MIDI Disks come in packets of six and are musically interesting, highly motivating, and range from simple drum patterns to full orchestrations.

Piano 101

Level 4 completes Bastien Piano Basics. Students play at the intermediate level throughout, and by the end have followed the gradual multi-key approach through all twelve keys. Parallel major and minor scales and the keys and scales of Gb, Bb, B and E Minor are covered. New technical and theoretical concepts are presented including overlapping pedal technique, dotted eighth and sixteenth notes, augmented and diminished triads, syncopation, and sonatina form. The final pages offer important resources including one page devoted to the circle of fifths, another offering a chord dictionary of all triads and dominant seventh chords on all 12 tones, and several pages of the major and harmonic minor scales in one octave with cadences.
