This blues for band was originally composed as a brass quartet for
  Borealis Brass. It is part of a series of pieces in a blues style named for
  each the composers dogs. This one refers to the fact that when Borealis Brass
  would rehearse in the members homes, there were invariably up to four dogs
  lying among the players, sleeping through rehearsal. It was expanded for band
  in 2015. A performance option would be to project picture of the band
  members' dogs on screen during the music.

This three movement work for concert band is an expansion of one of the
  composer's early works for trombone quartet of the same title. Influenced in
  part by video game music of the 1990's, and while not specifically a sacred
  work, the piece traces the epic story of Moses and his people's passage from
  Egypt across the Red Sea.

Passages and Prophets

This piece for strings and piano is perfect for a winter or Christmas
  concert. The music contemplates a quiet winter morning, perhaps a Christmas
  morning, before everyone is awake and all the day's activities begin.

These two African American Spirituals combine in the band piece that
  challenges player with syncopation and some simple counterpoint. Great for
  concert or contest.

I'm Gonna Sing

This advanced work in 7/8 time is a tribute to the composer's dogs Maggie
  and Skip. The piece builds to a final climax where the entire band howls
  together. The work was chosen as an official selection of the Coups de Vents
  international composition competition 2008.

Howl

Three scenes of Montreal landmarks are represented in this suite for
  young band. The Basilica of Notre Dame is represented by echoes of chants
  long sung by worshippers at the cathedral. Old Montreal is described as
  transporting one to a village in France, so here we have a melody with an
  accompaniment reminiscent of an Accordian. The final Bonsecours Market is
  represented by the hustle and bustle of a lively 2/4 tune. The drum cadence
  and fanfare in the middle represent the current government uses of the market
  buildings.

Quiet Mornings

Five short impressions of the Great Lakes. Grade 4 concert and contest piece. Each movement carries the English/Indigenous/French name for the lake it represents.

The Great Lakes are the largest group of lakes, by surface area on our planet Earth. They contain 21% of Earthas surface freshwater, by volume. Lake Superior is the largest lake in the world by surface area, and contains 10% of the worldas surface freshwater. Long considered by the indigenous peoples who live along their vast coastlines to be sweet water seas, these lakes are precious and vital to our world.
Citizens of two countries, one province, and eight states currently live on these great shores. In Canada, we recognize that these are Robinson Superior Treaty, Robinson Huron Treaty, Williams Treaties, Upper Canada Treaties, and Manitoulin Island Treaty lands. In the United States, we recognize that these lands were the lands of many indigenous peoples, particularly the Santee Dakota, Menominee, Ioway, Ho-chunk, Illinois, Potawatomi, Sauk, Mascouten, Fox, Miami, Kickapoo, Shawnee, Ojibwe, Ottowa, Petun, Nipissing, Algonkin, Wandotte, and Iroquois. In addition, many indigenous peoples now in the American Great Plains once lived in the great lakes region.
The lakes have long served as a gateway to the interior of North America, with waterways connecting them from the Atlantic Ocean through all of the lakes, and by canal, to the Mississippi River. From the earliest times, people have used the lakes for shipping, transportation, and fishing. Their grand coastlines serve as places of recreation with miles of beaches and dunes. Their climate allows for the growing of fruit, especially grapes and cherries. They are so large that they create their own weather. Just think about lake effect snow!
In Mers d'eau douce, the lakes are presented in order from smallest to largest. Each movement, while separate, connects to the others, as the lakes connect to each other. Each movementas title gives the current name of the lake, an indigenous name of the lake, and the translation or meaning of the indigenous name. In each movement, I try to musically capture the character of the lake described by the name given to it by the various indigenous
people who inhabited its coastlines. Erie, as named by the Iroquois people is called Long Tail, Ontario, Lake of Shining Water as named by the Wyandotte nation, as is Huron (A European name for the Wyandotte people), appropriately called Sweetwater Sea. The Ojibwe people call Lake Michigan the Grand Sea, and Superior the Great Sea. When I created this music, I kept in mind my vision of these lakes as well. I grew up on the shores of Lake Superior, and lived near Michigan, Huron, and Erie for a good part of my adult life. I have traveled to Lake Ontario and spent time there as well. These lakes were a formative part of my life, as they are for all who are fortunate enough to call their shores home.

Mers D'eau Douce

This piece was commissioned by the Red Deer Regional Catholic Schools for
  their grade 8/9 massed band. The Latin title means new life. The melodic
  material is based on the Gregorian chant Victimae Paschale Laudes. While
  sacred in the context of Easter, the piece is also about spring, rebirth, and
  new beginnings. Good for concert or contest. Grade 2+/3

Vita Nova

This five movement work was commissioned by the International Polar Year Alaska and Premiered for band by the Red Deer College Symphonic Winds. It is a five movement work about the circumpolar North.

Polar Synthesis

The Marquette (Michigan) City Band premiered my work Sweet Water Seas on June 23, 2022. They invited me to conduct the premiere of that work, and to play a trombone solo with the band. I grew up in Marquette, and played in the city band through high school and college and beyond, even conducting the group on several occasions. This ensemble has a special place in my heart and in my training. Many of its members are mentors to me and dear friends. It is always exciting to hear your compositions played for an audience, and especially exciting when that happens in your home town. In recent years, since moving to Canada, I have been playing quite a bit of bass trombone. I wanted to perform Goff Richards Rainy Day in Rio, but a concert band version of that work doesnt exist, yet. So I decided to write my own piece in a similar style.
 
 The Theme of the concert is based around water, so I kept the idea of a rainy day. One thing that I love to do, is to take a walk on a warm rainy day, I have since my childhood. I love the sound of the rain, the smell of the wet ground and wet plants, and the feeling of the water falling on me. Marquette has a park by Lake Superior that is a popular place for walking, Presque Isle (Known locally as the Island). Two days a week, the road around the island is closed for walkers. There are many nature trails in the park as well. I have great memories of walking around the Island in a warm summer rain, and it is these memories I was thinking of when I composed this piece. I tried to compose something that would be a good fit for a summer band concert in the park, with a latin style, laid back and a bit lazy. Enjoy!

  text and title For the Beauty of the Earth still makes a wonderful addition

For the Beauty of the Earth

This three movement work was composed for Borealis Brass upon the
  occasion of their visit to the Universiti Teknologi Mara in Shah Alam
  Malaysia and to the city of Kuala Lumpur. The work celebrates the coming
  together of people from two different cultures and the similarities we all
  share. Both Kuala Lumpur and Fairbanks Alaska are built at the confluence of
  two rivers. The work was premiered in Shah Alam in 2013 by the Borealis
  Brass.
