Edward Elgar's symphonic poem Polonia was composed as a tribute to Paderewski for a special concert honouring Poland on 6 July 1915. Although the piece is mainly Elgar's own work, it includes quotations from the Polish National Anthem, other Polish patriotic songs, and themes from Paderewski and Chopin. Paderewski, to whom the work was dedicated, received it with genuine admiration. He wrote to Elgar after hearing the work for a second time in October: "I heard your noble composition, my beloved Polonia, on two different occasions: deeply touched by the graciousness of your friendly thought, and profoundly moved by the exquisite beauty of your work, I write you a letter of sincere and affectionate appreciation."
