Written for the East River Mountain Town Band of Bluefield, WV, Prayers
of Concord is a work that implores concord, or unity, for us all. Our country
has seen a divide over many issues, and notwithstanding the current pandemic
that separates us from our loved ones. This piece, with melody and
countermelody and thick harmony, conveys the need to come together in this
turbulent time in concord, to make things better for the future. A simple 3 note melody is expanded upon and
explored by the ensemble, culminating in the ensemble coming together at the
end for a celebratory statement of concord.
This piece is also dedicated to the memory of Lee Courts, former bass
clarinet player and MC for the East Mountain Town Band, who lost his life in
a fight with Covid-19. Lee was a wonderful and kind person, an example for us
all in a time when Concord is so greatly needed.
