This piece in particular is one of several short pieces I wrote for a solo flute and string orchestra during a 6 month hospital stay. All of them are similar in subject matter in that they are musical depictions of various scenes. This one is designed to sound like something I would hum to go to sleep, but developed somewhat further. I would often hum to keep myself occupied when the silence felt deafening. I had the privilege of watching the sun set while I sat on my bed, with nothing to occupy myself with but my mind. I had few belongings, and the unit was often rowdy and restless. When I had the ability to listen to music (considered a "privilege"), I would listen to several of Mahler's adagios. I grew to have an affinity with that of his 10th symphony, and the lonely sound before the rest of the strings enters. To me, it felt like a warm embrace. While this piece draws influence from Mahler's adagios, it is far less complex and quite short.
