In May 2017 Marty Haugen spent a weekend with our sacred music community
in the Golden Isles. After hearing an organ piece I'd arranged on a familiar
hymn tune Marty suggested I arrange an organ work based on his ever popular
"Shepherd Me, O God".
The Prelude is very lyrical at the start rising to a brass statement of the
melodic phrase "in the name of the Lord" found in the octavo. From
there the Prelude works backward winding down to a very soft ending of the octavo's
melodic refrain.
The Chaccone (a musical form using a short repeated base line) builds in
intensity, breaking into the melodic material of verse 4 in the octavo. From there the Chaccone returns
in toccata form for a full organ conclusion of the refrain's melody.
