Inspired by the time that Gershwin spent in Paris, this jazz-influenced symphonic poem (or tone poem) evokes the sights and energy of the postwar French capital during the Années folles, the "crazy times" of the 1920s. Originally set for the standard instruments of the symphony orchestra plus celesta, saxophones, and automobile horns, this setting for symphonic band has been skillfully arranged and orchestrated to capture the original Gershwin creation and make it performable by today's symphonic bands.

An Irving Berlin extravaganza comprising Alexander's Ragtime Band (1911), an enormous hit selling a million copies in its first year; Always (1925), composed as a wedding gift to his wife Ellin McKay; What'll I Do? (1923), a chart-topper covered by numerous artists; and Blue Skies, finished overnight in December 1926 for the Broadway show "Betsy" and later used in many landmark films.

King originally released this march in 1910, his first year as a circus musician.

Celebration for Winds and Percussion

Vicennial

This Ellington-style ballad is what big band music is all about. It features a wide array of potential solos with featured solo parts included for alto sax, tenor sax, flugelhorn, bass trombone, and guitar. All at about 76 bpm, it features a straight eighth feel with a brief contrasting section in swing style. Optional parts are included for flute, clarinet, horn in F and tuba. An exceptional way to feature any or all of your soloists!

Before the Lights Go Out

Composed in 1885 by a gifted young cornetist and bandmaster, this is one of the most enduring circus marches, or "screamers." The quick tempo and pounding rhythms evoke the chaos and thundering hooves of four-footed animals running into a circus arena instead of the steady, regimented pulse of men marching. Presumably, the title refers to minor and major modes, hence the "storms" and the "sunshine."

In Storm and Sunshine

Beginning players will love this thrilling ride into the unknown. Driving percussion, with gong and timpani used to excellent effect, exciting themes, creative harmonies, and excellent scoring will have your beginning ensemble sounding full and mature. All sections have engaging parts that reinforce technique, dotted quarter-eighth rhythms, and eighth rests. Very comfortable ranges. Clarinets play above the break. Perfect for developed elementary bands and young middle school bands.

Groovisimo

A contemporary work for solo trumpet and symphonic band. The trumpet solo requires a performer with moderate to advanced skills, while the band work is quite playable by a moderately accomplished ensemble. A welcome addition to the repertoire.

Soliloquy

"Conjubilant" is Latin for "shouting together with joy." In this case, this overture for band has the ensemble playing together for joy. From its opening brass fanfare through the woodwind flourishes, it presents an almost cinematic work that is sure to grip your audiences from the first note to the climactic end. It is especially suited to concert or festival performance.

Doris Eaton Travis introduced this classic song on Broadway in "The Hollywood Music Box Revue" in 1929. It was widely popularized by Cliff Edwards and the Brox Sisters, and many other artists had hits with this tune. In 1952 it was featured in the classic Gene Kelly motion picture version called, not surprisingly, "Singin' in the Rain." This arrangement was created with optional flute or clarinet to replace first alto or first tenor parts if you wish to use those instruments to vary your ensemble or to feature additional players.

This infectious minor blues chart is held together with a consistent light rock beat. Written for a flexible four-part wind combo with rhythm section, it's great for any pairing of performers you have.

Battle of the Titans

The Ash Grove is one of the most well-known and widely adapted Welsh folk songs. This setting for developing concert band opens with a clarinet cadenza that may be played as written or may become an ad-lib solo. The lovely melody is then taken through rich development and restatements that work their way from section to section while exploring various tempo, meter, and texture changes. A work rich in musical and educational value.
