A bit minimalistic, a bit contrapuntal, a bit homogenous, a bit chaotic. Purdy's Maze starts off with a quartet of stick clicks bringing the four marimba players on to the playing surfaces gradually. From there, the piece moves organically from layered lines of fast-moving rhythms and melody to hocket effects to a chorale of rolls to more layered lines and back to the stick clicks. As if in a maze, the music finds its way in and out. The piece is superbly conceived and a treat to listen to. A terrific addition to you program!
