Palestinian-American poet, Deema Shehabi was born in Kuwait in 1970. Her mother was from Gaza and her father from Jerusalem. The text of Qasida of Breath evokes Deema's memories of a beautiful land contrasted with the current reality of a world broken by war.
Covington sets this challenging text with supple melodies, influenced by Arabic music, which he uses along with tone clusters to emphasize both the evocative beauty of the poetry and the grief and anguish of a land rendered barren by the ravages of war.
The Qasida is an ancient Arabic form of poetry, similar to an ode.
