Quinto (Spanish for fifth) is based on several versions of the number five. There is a recurring fifth in the melody, the underlying ostinato pattern is based on fifths, and the piece is based in 5/4 meter. Further, the title word refers to the smallest Cuban conga, the quinto. An infectious melody makes it way through several instrument sections leading to a contrasting lyrical middle section in 4/4 meter. An uplifting modulation leads back into a recapitulation of the original theme and there is a gradual build and addition of instruments and countermelodies until full ensemble is involved in a dramatic and joyous conclusion to this work of picture music. Students will enjoy imagining the story this music might be telling and audiences will be engaged at the contrasts in dynamics and color.
