Film music is usually written precisely to match on screen action.  It helps amplify our emotions towards what we are seeing on the movie screen. Music usually conjures up a visual image for listeners even without a specific movie playing in front of us. With this piece, let your mind wander free and see what images the music calls to mind as you listen. I had some ideas in mind when I wrote it, perhaps you'll see something completely different?

Light the Beacons! Wind Ensemble Version

Howth (Ho!-th) was originally a fishing village on a peninsula north of Dublin city in Ireland.  In Victorian times it became a popular seaside day trip from Dublin as it was linked to the city by a railway as far back as 1847.  Since then it has remained popular for hiking, sight-seeing or just a delicious lunch on the harbor.  I grew up in Ireland and while waiting for a flight in 2024 I visited Howth on a pleasant summers afternoon for the first time in over 30 years.  I had a very pleasant time with my entire family and was struck by how vibrant and welcoming the village was.  I reluctantly left to catch my flight but the idea of writing a piece to remember that afternoon stuck in my head until I wrote the piece you'll hear today over the winter months in early 2025.

Echoes of Howth

The Lancaster Bomber was the British RAF's heavy bomber during WWII.   It played a crucial role in the bombing of Germany and specific missions, such as the famous Dambusters raid.  However over 3,200 were lost in action, each one with a crew of 7 men.   This piece is meant as a tribute to the role the plane played in the Allies’ success during WWII

To complete the requirements for my master’s degree I rescored an alternate history comedy movie where Germany invaded Britain.  This piece forms an Overture to that movie soundtrack.  The piece opens with a March in the best British style.   Then our heroes make their entrance with a theme to honor the crewmen who flew in the Lancaster during the war.   After that we enter an exciting “Dogfight” as the bomber returns from its raid and is intercepted by Nazi fighter planes. There is a musical battle between the Nazi theme in Bb minor and our hero’s theme, which tries to return three times and is finally successful! Fragments of the march theme intrude along with an exciting action theme to convey the excitement and terror of the dogfight these planes were in on a nightly basis.  Finally, the March theme returns for a rousing conclusion to the piece.

Last Flight of the Lancaster

I moved to Seattle from a small town in Ireland 30 years ago.  I lived first just off I-90 on the East side and driving into Seattle  on a nice day you are hit with that stunning view of the city and the Olympic Mountains in the background!  I often felt compelled to blast some of my favorite music in the car on that drive!   There are lots of amazing views around the city, from Kerry Park, or West Seattle looking back at the city, or driving south on I-5 near Boeing Field when the Mountain is out!   For "A Seattle Overture", each segment of the piece tries to recapture some of the awe and wonder I felt as a fresh immigrant to Seattle 30 years ago.  If you made a highlight reel of some of the great Seattle landscapes, maybe this piece could be the soundtrack!   Makes a great concert opener or closer!  Rousing brash fanfares make the audience sit up and pay attention.

Need a Superhero?  Light the Beacons and see who shows up! This fun orchestral romp is written in the style of superhero film themes.  It will get the audiences attention fast and makes a rousing energetic concert opener or a perfect encore piece!

Light The Beacons (Orchestral Version)

In 2008, I met my adopted daughter, Jin Nao Wan, for the first time.  Shortly thereafter I wrote a musical piece about the experience.  In 2022, I expanded it for a large orchestra setting.  Described by composer William Boston as "A musical triumph!"  Orchestrated for a large ensemble of Triple Winds, 6 Horns, 4 Trumpets, 5 Trombones, Tuba, Timpani, 5 Percussion, 2 Harps, Piano and Strings.

These three short pieces were written during the first days of the Ukraine War.  For Polina was inspired by a famous photo of a grieving
 mother and her dead 8 year old daughter who had been killed by a bomb.  It's a mixture of anger that this happened and
 grief and compassion for the mother.  A Moment For Peace is a short interlude in the hope in those early days of the war that a quick
resolution would be found.  "Ammunition Not a Ride" was inspired by the bravery shown by 
President Zelinsky after he was offered to be evacuated from the country by the US shortly after the war broke out and he 
refused, saying "I need Ammunition, Not A Ride".   
The piece does not conclude in a definitive way as the war is still ongong and it's outcome is unknown.

Three War Sketches

For as long as I can remember a part of a simple tune was stuck in  my head that my Mum used to sing to be as a very young child.  I never knew 
what the tune was but would occasionally hear snippets that sounded like something similar and it would activate this ear worm 
buried deep in my brain.  Finally I asked her about it and she was able to identify it as "Whistling Gypsy" by Dublin composer 
Leo Maguire. It's a popular tune that has been covered by lots of different groups from The Wiggles to The Chieftans.  Finally I could 
hear the entire song!  My Mom passed away in 2022 and I listened to this song as a way to remember her at that time. I had 
wanted to possibly do my own piece based on this song and when the Thalia Symphony asked me to write a piece for them for
their concert titled "Old and New", I decided to take this "old" tune and do a new orchestral treatment of it.  Each of the themes presented
in this piece are based loosely on the Whistling Gypsy theme and the theme itself is presented in full at rehearsal "D".
Thanks to Joseph White, Director of the Thalia Symphony for comissioning the piece and thanks to me Mum for singing it in my
ear all those years ago.

Remembering an Irish Mam

This lighthearted, uplifting piece for Brass Ensemble (4 Trumpets, 4 Horns, 3 Trombones, Euph and Tuba), was written for my friend's annual summer get together of Brass playing friends.  The tunes and themes reflect the joyousness of a summer music session.  It was composed over the course of 2 Days in August so I gave it that name.  Then I decided that putting the words Music From the Motion Picture in front of the title would make it sound better!  Don't search too hard for the movie though!
