In its two short movements (Drammatico and With Driving Energy), Rhapsody and Riffs explores some idioms of contemporary American music, spanning the worlds of classical and jazz. As befitting a piece with rhapsody in the title, there are several opportunities for the solo sax to improvise over shimmering harmonics and tremolos in the strings in the first movement. Lyrical lines in the winds alternate with fast riffs and driving, pulsing repeated notes in the brass to provide a kaleidoscopic sound world. The second movement, led by a battery of field percussion instruments, borrows from the idiom of ragtime to create a driving intensity that eventually yields to a slower, lyrical section featuring the English horn, only to return with renewed energy for a dramatic and breathless conclusion.
