The rickshaw was the transportation of choice for the Japanese elite during the 19th century. This lively piece is a light-hearted musical depiction of riding in one of these human-powered carts. The work begins with a moderately paced main theme and folk-like harmonies. The piece then slows down a bit as the rickshaw driver takes a brief rest. But then it's time to get back on the street as the original tempo returns. A frantic presto concludes the piece as the operator runs to get his rider to their destination on time. Delightful!
