Rival begins with flute alone: Are you nervous? Over-confident? Did those notes sound right? The clarinet player sneaks on stage and starts playing, much to the surprise of the flutist. Playing with the dichotomy between competition and cooperation, it was written for Kimberly Trumbull on her senior recital: “This piece was written to reflect my personality and love for overreacting.” The performers are encouraged to use body language and facial expressions creatively in the performance. No 2 performances will be exactly alike. After all, a duet can be a competitive sport.
