<p>Ralph Vaughan Williams originally wrote "Dona Nobis Pacem" (Latin: Grant us peace) in 1936 as a cantata in six sections for soprano and baritone soloists, chorus, and large orchestra. Robert L. Anello arranged the cantata as a symphony for concert band comprised of five, contiguous movements, bridged by oboe solos. Each movement musically portrays a different aspect of war. Gustav Mahler's "Veni Creator Spiritus" was a new musical setting for the lyrics of a 9th century Latin hymn, originally sung as a Gregorian chant, as an invocation of the Holy Spirit during the celebration of the Christian Feast of Pentecost. This work would comprise the Part I of the symphony with Part II being a setting of the words from the closing scene of "Faust" by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. Mahler envisioned the premiere of this new symphony, Number 8, as a massively grand spectacle, with an orchestra not only including strings but a large brass and woodwind section, eight soloists, two full adult choruses, and a children's choir. The full complement for the premiere was 171 instrumentalists and 858 singers, a total of 1029 musicians, which inspired the promoter to advertise the work as "Symphony of a Thousand." In this work, grand statements expressing the awe of divine majesty alternate with gentle melodic lines of tender love. It combines moments of awesome dramatic tension with the lightness of a fugue. Robert Anello's arrangement makes this exceptional music accessible to large concert bands while maintaining the essence and flow of Mahler's original work.

Ralph Vaughan Williams composed "Toward the Unknown Region" as a work for chorus and orchestra based on "Darest Thou Now, O Soul," a work by the American poet, Walt Whitman (1819-1892). For Robert Anello, Vaughan Williams has composed a reflection on the possibilities of afterlife that musically conveys Whitman's words without even needing to know that "Toward the Unknown Region" was initially written to be sung by a chorus. It begins tentatively, on occasion seeming almost to start over, but soon begins to grow and overlap itself. About halfway through, the music ascends to a plateau, and conveys the ideas that one has traversed that plateau and sees ahead sunrise over a verdant valley lush with roses and other flowers. The ending conveys ecstasy and contentment at the wondrous discovery. Anello captures the emotion of this choral work in an arrangement for concert band.

Toward the Unknown Region

Following a brief, post-war stage of composing works of a nationalistic
  bent, Ralph Vaughan Williams headed into a more ecclesiastical direction. His
  motet "O Clap Your Hands," composed in 1920 and written for chorus,
  brass, and percussion, is a lively, bright, and musically colorful rendition
  of the King James Bible version of Psalm 47. "Shout Out With Joy"
  (arranged from the motet "O Clap Your Hands" by Ralph Vaughan
  Williams) captures that motet's enthusiasm in a concert band arrangement,
  using the timbre of the instruments to convey in a tonal expression the
  lyrics of Vaughan Williams' original psalm setting.
