A grand and sweeping setting of Augustus Toplady's beloved hymn, utilizing James Ward's New City Fellowship tune as well as the original Toplady tune. The work features a challenging, sensitive, and collaborative piano part that colors the story of the hymn even as the choir delivers the text, with choral writing designed to be evocative without being inapproachable. This makes for a gratifying and complex setting that dwells on the deeper meanings of Toplady's text, and relates it to the walk of the individual believer. This work is designed for sacred concerts, appropriate for advanced highschool choirs and collegiate choral ensembles. It would also work well for church choirs, especially in special services and concerts where a six-minute anthem is appropriate.
For mixed voices and piano | Performance time: ~6'
Orchestration and parts due to premiere in April of 2026.
Special thanks to James Ward for use of his tune, used with permission.
