The first piece that I composed for the Stones River Chamber Players at the request of their then-artistic director Jerry Perkins is "Rocky Streams." The original idea was for me to compose a trio but little by little instruments were added to the ensemble until the ensemble doubled in size to flute oboe clarinet alto saxophone trumpet and trombone. The work is in four movements: a prolonged melody a light-hearted scherzo that focuses on evolving tone colors a slow canon which is then played backwards and a fast driving conclusion.
