Romanze

Romanze is a lovely work for solo piano. Providing the pianist with opportunity to show their talents with deep expression as well as some fireworks at times. After a short introduction, the main theme appears with a sweet, sometimes reflective, and loving melody. It is marked "molto flessibile ed espressivo," setting the general style and tone for the first part. The “elastic” phrasing and unpredictable harmonic movement allow and encourage the pianist to explore different colors of tone and emotion. Impulsive bursts of transient energy expand on the melody, suggesting a deeper passion. Energy changes in the central section. The texture thickens, and the rhythm becomes more spirited, with a bit of Iberian flair. The harmony is more visceral, and the playing style more aggressive while still maintaining a connection to the material from the opening section. Finally, the storm passes and the original theme returns, stripped to essentials. And, as we began, so do we end, with a sweet, evocative farewell.
