The first movement of a suite of three miniatures inspired by the remarkable artistry of little-known French impressionist artist Berthe Morisot (1841–1895). Morisot was highly admired by her fellow Impressionist colleagues, and her works were exhibited in the very first Impressionist Salon of 1874 (a salon being an exhibition) as well as many thereafter. Inspired by a painting called The Harbor at Lorient, this movement contrasts the grandeur of the tall ships with the sense of separation expressed by the lone woman in the foreground. A perfect concert opener.
