The Sandhill Fanfare was written as a celebratory concert opener. It is a joyous and energetic piece fiercly proclaiming the natural wonder of the open plains and the animals and people that live there.
The brisk 12/8 meter is peppered with syncopated rhythms. There are two primary rhythmic patterns. The rst, introduced in the low brass, horns, and saxophones is carried throughout by bass instruments and tutti in the short interludes (e.g., m. 16ff). The second rhythm, first heard in the wood- winds, acts as a rhythmic counterpoint to the other creating an exciting interplay.
