Scherzo From String Symphony No. 11

Felix Mendelssohn's String Symphony No. 11 was written during the summer of 1823 when the composer was a mere 14 years old. Graceful and charming, the work shows the influence of composers such as Haydn and C.P.E. Bach. It also illustrates the remarkable compositional prowess of the teenage Mendelssohn. The second movement is a lively Scherzo based on a Swiss folksong that Mendelssohn heard during a family vacation in that country's Bernese Oberland region.
