"The Prisoner's Song", (1924) [also known as Meet Me By Moonlight'; Prison Walls'; &amp;/or If I Had the Wings of Angel'] attributed to the Massey Boys (Robert and Guy) but credited to Vernon Dalhart, was a huge hit of the 1920's due to its simple melody, and pseudo-southern-folksong character.  It served as inspiration for songs like the hymn-tune I'll Fly Away'.  The lyrics speak of isolation, regret, and dreams of a better life.  An apt piece to program requiring a musical selection of unrequited love.  This arrangement is for 4-part TTBB ensemble to be performed a cappella.  Performance time: 3:06+-

"At the Mid Hour of Night" comes from The Irish Melodies, National Airs, Sacred Songs, Etc., of Thomas Moore, published between 1807 and 1834.  Moore, himself a singer and accomplished musician, is now best remembered for the lyrics of "The Minstrel Boy" and "The Last Rose of Summer."  His poem "At the Mid Hour of Night" is about love, loss and belief in the afterlife as a place where love persists.  The suggested tune' for this poem is the harp air: O! Molly Dear AKA Molly My Dear an Irish air and fiddle tune.  This 2024 setting of Moore's masterpiece is scored for 4-part SATB ensemble to be performed a cappella.  Performance time: 2:55+

"Gloucestershire Wassail", is an old song, sung around the Feast of Yule, by parties who go about dressed with boughs and ribons, carrying a bowl, which they expect to be filled with beer or cider, and a toast put therein.  It is still customary in many parts of England to hand round the wassail, or health-bowl, on New Year's Eve. The tune of this song is traditional popular music of the day  a universal favourite (tune) in Gloucestershire.  This arrangement of "Gloucestershire Wassail", traditionally strophic in structure, has been changed to a rondo form with the original popular tune serving as the refrain or chorus and the text of the many verses serving as just that  a verse, giving emphasis to the text as sung by carousing, rural merry-makers to their feudal lords.  It is scored for a 4-part SATB ensemble with piano accompaniment.  Performance time: 4:55+-

"Farewell to Tarwathie" is probably best known from Judy Collins' recording of 1970 that was accompanied by the songs of Humpback whales; but it started first with a poem written by the Scottish poet-peasant George Scroggie, published in 1857.  His poem was accompanied by the traditional 18th century Scottish air "Kennet's Dream". Thus, the marriage of Scroggie's words to a well-known Scottish fiddle tune gives us the "Farewell to Tarwathie" as we know it today.  It is a song about a young sailor saying good-bye to family and friends as he heads out to sea to find riches in hunting the whale.  This arrangement is scored for a traditional choral mixed ensemble with divisi [SMATTBB] (at times) and a bass-baritone solo, to be performed a cappella.  Performance time: 5:30+-

“This Land” (or “This Land Is Your Land”) by American folk singer, Woody Guthrie was written in critical response to Irving Berlin’s ever-popular ‘God Bless America’ that Guthrie felt ignored the social problems of the Great Depression. And yet This Land’s original purpose was to protest against the social inequality of erasing Indigenous people’s historical claim to the land. The original lyrics reads: “This land is made for you and me.” (rather than ‘was’) which puts the song in the present tense and makes it more apt to a society ever-changing like today. This arrangement is scored for 4-part SATB (with divisi) to be performed a cappella. It includes 6 verses (the 7th being the chorus itself) as found from various early original sources. This Land

"The first Nowell" (The First Noel), in its many evolutions over 400 years, remains beloved not necessarily for its tune' as much as the story it has to tell  angels' announcing to the shepherds "Nowell, Born is the King of Israel", and then continuing with the journey of the magi'.  This 2024 setting of the traditional English carol speaks to the mood, the character, the atmosphere of the first' nativity, giving pause to reflect on that time of wondrous awe.  This arrangement uses five of the nine original verses to tell its tale. It is scored for a traditional SATB ensemble, using 8-part [SSAATTBB] divisi for color.  Piano provides the accompaniment. The melody of the traditional popular French Christmas carol, Il est ne le divin enfant (He is born, The Divine Child), is based upon the hunting call La tete bizarde of the 1500's. French lyrics were added sometime during the 1700's.  The tune for this carol can be found in Jean-Romain Grosjean's Airs des noel lorrain, (1862) where it was first published.  This arrangement pays homage to Gabriel Faure, (French composer, organist, pianist and teacher) for his arrangement for voice and organ dated 23 December 1888. This arrangement is for 4-part SATB ensemble and keyboard (piano or organ) accompaniment or could be performed a cappella. It uses both the original French text and the traditional English lyrics. Performance time: 2:45+-

Il est ne le divan enfant

"Green Bushes", an immensely popular traditional English folk song (c.1760's) is about a young man walking one morning who overhears a woman singing of her true love. He immediately offers her rich clothing if she will marry him instead. She rejects his offer, and yet almost immediately, she changes her mind, on condition that he be 'loyal and constant'. Finally, her former true love appears and is disappointed as he sees the pair disappearing into the distance. The green bushes are both part of the landscape and a symbol of virginity.  This arrangement is scored for 4-part SATB ensemble to be performed a cappella.  Performance time: 3:50+-

The lyrics for "Will ye go, lassie, go?" are by the Scottish poet Robert Tannahill, and come from his poem "The Braes o' Balquhither". They were set to music by Scottish composer Robert Archibald Smith, and published in 1824 in The Scottish Minstrel.  The tune, thought to be a Scottish/Irish folk song, has morphed over time with many masterful interpretations.  This 2023 setting is arranged for 4-part SATB ensemble, to be performed a cappella. This tender "courting song" is an invitation to go pull wild mountain thyme' that grows around the blooming heather' as the summer approaches. Performance time: 3:15.

The Habanera (L'amour est un oiseau rebelle) from Bizet's opera CARMEN is probably one of the most recognizable and popular tunes in all of operatic repertoire. This 4-part SATB ensemble arrangement is to be performed a cappella.  It has not only the original French text, but also a new English text for English speaking choirs.  The performance time is 2:57+ In the classroom this is an excellent piece to study language, form, style and serve as an introduction to opera as an art form.  In the recital or concert hall its familiarity with audiences make this a winner.

"The Parting Glass" is a traditional 17th century Scottish melody often sung at the end of a gathering of friends.  Its local popularity as a farewell song' is found in both Scotland and Ireland, sung for, and to, close friends.  This arrangement is for solo high [soprano or tenor] voice and keyboard. Performance time: 3:20+- A well suited song for Scottish/Irish festivals, or concerts with a Celtic or English-Renaissance theme.

Cantique de Noel (O Holy Night) is probably one of the most popular musical seasonal offerings.  This arrangement is scored as a duet for two sopranos (or two tenors) and piano.  It uses both the original French text of poet Placide Cappeau and the English translation of the American Unitarian Minister John Sullivan Dwight.  It is highly effective with classically trained singers. Performance time: 4:27

"Down in the River to Pray" (or Down to the River to Pray'; Down in the Valley to Pray'; The Good Old Way'; or Come, Let Us All Go Down')  whatever the title  it speaks across cultures across generations.  Its origin unknown, it has been thought to be an African-American spiritual, an Appalachian song, a Southern gospel hymn, or just a good old tune that brings peace and comfort to those in need.  It has a rich illustrious history during the Underground Railroad, making this an apt tune during Black History month; or sing it in church, at a bluegrass festival or just about any gathering of musicians  and be prepared that folks are going to sing along.  This arrangement is scored for 4-part SATB ensemble to be performed a cappella.  Performance time: 3:15.

Down in the River to Pray

"Lowlands Away" is a traditional Anglo-Scottish tune that exists in multiple versions, as both a ballad and a shanty. In this its ballad form the narrator mourns the death of the woman left behind by her beau. Note: "John" was a slang term for a sailor, used to describe a ship's deckhands.  And shanties often have a call and response structure, this allowed one sailor to set the rhythm of work for the others.  This arrangement is scored for a 4-part SATB ensemble, with the bass section taking the lead.  It is to be performed a cappella.  Performance time: 3:10+-

Lowlands Away

"Whatll I Do?", composed in 1923 for "The New Music Box Revue", with words and music by Irving Berlin, has been said to be autobiographical.  Perhaps so, this Great American Songbook standard, composed in the style of a waltz, has resonated with performers and audiences now for over a century. More often than not, "Whatt'll I Do?" is performed as a torch song ballad by a gifted chanteuse lamenting love lost.  However, the touching text is really a dialogue between the lover and his paramour, making it a conversation for two  appropriately a duet.  This arrangement is scored for She (a soprano) and He (a baritone, baritenor or tenor) with piano accompaniment.  Performance time: 3:50+- A great addition to any Valentine's Day program  In Love/Out of Love.

A Drop of Nelson's Blood" (Roll the Old Chariot Along) is one of the most gruesome sea shanties that has evolved from shanty crew to shanty crew, and from pub to pub.  Its beginnings are suspect: Is this a variation of the African-American spiritual "The Golden Chariot" or is this a parody of a Salvation Army revivalist hymn?  The dilemma: How to get a dead man's body back home while at sea. Why preserve his corpse in a barrel of rum!  This concert' setting of the shanty is scored for 4-part men's chorus with piano accompaniment.  Performance time: 4:20+-

"She Moved Through the Fair" (also known as Keayrt Dooyrt My Ghraih Veem Rhym') is a traditional Irish folk song in which the narrator (tenor) sees his lover (soprano) move away from him through the fair, after telling him that since her family will approve, "it will not be long, love, till our wedding day". Yet, she returns as a ghost at night, and repeats the words "it will not be long, love", implying her own tragic death, and perhaps the couple's reunion in the afterlife. It is scored for a 4-part SATB ensemble and pianist. Performance time: 4:56.

She Moved Through the Fair

The popular traditional French folksong/carol, Noel Nouvelet (Sing we now of Christmas), dates back to the late 15th century.  It is believed to be a New Year's song in that the original text not only includes the Nativity but also the visit from the Magi, which is associated with Epiphany. Its tune is lively, yet carries a medieval folk-spirit of the Dorian mode.  It has charmingly simple lyrics, suggesting it is a teaching song, teaching the story of the Nativity to young children using the figures of the creche as reinforcement -  a wonderful dramatic performance in any home.  This arrangement is scored for a 3-part vocal ensemble (treble voices, tenors and basses) with piano accompaniment.  It uses both the original French text and traditional English translation as lyrics. Performance time: 1:20+-

"He Never Said a Mumblin' Word" (also known as "They Hung Him on a Cross", "Mumblin' Word", "Crucifixion", and "Easter") is an African-American Spiritual folk song of unknown origin. It became popular in 1871 with the Fisk Jubilee Singers, and gained a wider audience through noted music educator Nathaniel Clark Smith.  The text narrates the events of the crucifixion.  This arrangement is scored for a 4-part SATB ensemble with an acoustic double bass providing accompaniment.  The double bass part could be played on an electric keyboard capable of achieving that pizz. bass sound. Performance time: 4:42+-

He Never Said a Mumblin' Word

Home! Sweet Home! is one of the most famous songs that has survived from an opera that has fallen into obscurity, Clari, or The Maid of Milan' (1823).  It is that notoriety and sense of sentimental nostalgia that allows this song to be programmed on many a different concert - be it church, school auditorium or concert hall.  The words alone set the tone: "Home! sweet, sweet Home! Be it ever so humble, there's no place like home!"  This arrangement is scored for 4-part SATB voices to be performed a cappella.  The duration of this arrangement is 3:00.
