Markovich's work, HALLELUJAH IN THE DARKNESS, was written for her husband, Richard, during his struggle with an aggressive cancer. Through the dark times and now in the victory, through the good results and the disappointing ones, the ups and downs of recovery, they praised God. These various aspects are addressed through modes, textures, and mixed meters in a film score-like soundscape. The riveting third movement, We Will Glorify Him, was a put-your-foot-down commitment to praise, no matter what, and came from a rhythm Markovich woke up hearing. This quick movement incorporates sprechstimme, and is available separately as an exciting encore. "Hallelujah in the Darkness" creates an opportunity for amateur groups to enjoy and conquer the challenge of odd meters and for professional groups to delight their audiences with a new, fresh sound of worship. THE DABBLING DUCK was commissioned by Roger Wiesmeyer, English hornist with the Nashville Symphony Orchestra. It was written in April of 2020 during the coronavirus pandemic. A rhapsody or whimsical piece was initially discussed, but a week later, what burst out was a piece of rollicking fun. When Markovich approached Wiesmeyer with the change, his response was: "The world could use that right about now!" The world premiere was April 13, 2021 on the Arkansas Symphony (ASO) River Rhapsodies Series V.

  where memory can move from treasured moment to moment. This quiet piece is
  part of a larger work called "Lost Daughters." Virtuoso violist
  Brett Deubner requested an arrangement for viola, premiered it in 2020, and
  recorded it with Parma Records (release date June 25, 2021.)
    
    "Remember" for clarinet, piano, and chime was arranged by the
  composer from the original version for piano. A version for English horn and
  another for viola is available.

Mixed Trio Clarinet, Piano and Chimes

"Three Miniatures" brings the viola community opportunity for spirited fun and challenge. The first miniature is a showpiece, foreshadowing lyrical fragments of the second miniature. The second miniature is based on a melody Markovich heard in a dream, simple and without flash. The final miniature is a multi-metered, energetic drive to the finish.
          Symbolically, the first miniature represents the fight that wavers between free-flowing innovation and fragments of a measured past. The second miniature with its gradually wider skips represents a growing courage to be free of past constraint. An assured voice coaxes a cautious voice to step out of its comfort zone until the two voices can fly together. The third miniature symbolizes the flight of freedom, freedom from constraints that have kept us from adventure. This work was inspired by the exciting, ever-changing meters common in Stravinsky's Three Pieces for Clarinet.

Viola Trio

"Tiny motifs emerge, as does our purpose, and grow into an emotion-packed, multi-metered soundscape."
     EMERGENCE was commissioned by Rebecca Vendemo, woman founder/conductor of the Spring Hill Orchestra (SHO). A women's orchestra from Brazil joined with SHO to present the premiere on October 26, 2019. The theme is about our emerging purposes in a season where women, who have been traditionally undervalued, are being rightly recognized and brought forth. Just like our purpose emerges, fragments of the hymn emerge in this work and are nurtured and developed. They grow into the full-blown melody of the hymn, "Purpose," in all its triumph.
     "It was on my heart to write with Tennessee women in mind.  The motifs were gleaned from my childhood favorite hymn tune, "Purpose," by Martin F. Shaw. Shaw himself was an advocate for women in the church. Much to my delight, this work has not only inspired women but suppressed men to take a courageous step forward."  ~ Judith Markovich

Piano Ensemble

A transformative, contemporary dance suite in five movements for 12: woodwind quintet, trumpet, percussion, bass. (Oboe, clarinet, horn &amp; trumpet play tambourine briefly.)
THE LOOKING GLASS, dedicated to the late bassoonist, Lynette Cohen, is a unique, programmatic, five-movement work for twelve players: woodwind quintet, trumpet, bass and percussion. The title was inspired by the poet Dale Wimbrow, who challenges us to be true to the guy/gal in the glass.
1. The first movement embodies the carefree attitude of one who is blind to the disastrous consequences of not being true to yourself.
2. The second movement expresses the grief, confusion, and wonder while you discover your true identity.
3. The third movement walks us through the unsettling process of transformation.
4. The fourth movement is a free, soaring dance as the biblical King David might have danced. It incorporates the use of percussion instruments by the wind players as well as added percussionists.
5. The fifth and last movement is a joyful celebration of freedom!

Cello Duet

A Call from the Woods for solo viola was commissioned and premiered by
  Amaro DuBois. A recording is available as a single release on your favorite
  streaming platforms. It contains an optional cadenza section to be freely
  improvised. Dubois' cadenza is included on that recording. 
    
    ...Since my favorite place is smack dab in the middle of a damp forest, I
  hope to share some of that depth of beauty with you along with a touch of

A Call from the Woods

A short five-minute contemporary piano solo for professionals and
  students alike. This piece helps fill the gap in piano literature caused by a
  lack of simpler pieces with contemporary sounds. It will help develop the ear
  of younger students while giving professionals a short mediative work or
  encore to balance their programs.

Mixed Quartet Instumentation for Mezzo-soprano, Tenor, Viola, Piano

Voices Long Kept Silent was premiered on July 5 by cellist Diane Chaplin. The music begins with the soul's cry after generations of oppression. (Diane uses a delay pedal at specific points in the piece to signify the echo of time.) The cry gets stronger and stronger until about a quarter of the way through it breaks out into: "I'm.. angry!" The rhythm of these words--looong short short--will give this away. It is repeated twice more, each time stronger and clearer. Then the voice breaks out in a flood of righteous anger until it has emptied itself. From the dust rises a happy little tune free of an established foot-tapping rhythm, a dance of sorts that expresses its newfound freedom. As that settles down, there is a moment of thoughtfulness in which the voice realized there are many still bound. At that point, the beginning melody will return as a cry for those still in chains. As it is in life, once we are freed, we turn to free others.
